We’re excited to announce Deep Dive Learning Opportunity co-presenters, Fran Sherman & Lina To for In Solidarity We Rise: Healing, Opportunity and Justice for Girls, October 11-13, 2017.
Join co-presenters, Francine Sherman & Lina To at In Solidarity for their Deep Dive Learning Opportunity Panel Discussion – Life Lessons: A Girl-Centric Approach to Justice Reforms. For justice system involved girls who are bombarded with negative messages, developing a positive identity can be particularly challenging. Too often, policy and practice are disconnected from the lessons girls learn through the justice system, and so girls struggle well into adulthood with difficult relationships, challenges trusting others, and feelings of powerlessness. This presentation will connect girls’ experiences to justice system policies and reimagine policy to cultivate healthy female leaders.
Francine is a Clinical Professor at Boston College Law School where she has been teaching Juvenile Justice and Children’s Rights & Public Policy for the past twenty-five years and where she founded and directs the Juvenile Rights Advocacy Program. She speaks and writes widely about the juvenile justice system and, in particular, about girls in the justice system. She has spoken before Congress and at the White House, served on the U.S. Department of Justice National Advisory Committee on Violence Against Women focusing on children and teens victimized by domestic violence and sexual assault, and as consultant to OJJDP’s National Girls Initiative.
Her most recent report, Gender Injustice: System-Level Juvenile Justice Reforms for Girls, provides a comprehensive overview of the needs and pathways of girls into and through the justice system and details a developmental approach to current juvenile justice reforms.
Lina is currently the Assistant State Coordinator for Institutional Ministry at Straight Ahead Ministries. At 16 years old, gang-involved, and 8 months pregnant, Lina was locked-up for close to 5 years. While she was in lockup, several women came alongside her offering friendship and mentoring. After release, they continued to provide support and encouragement as Lina rebuilt her life through faith, education, employment and restored relationships.
Today, Lina is giving back. As a staff member at Straight Ahead Ministries, she regularly works in five juvenile detention facilities, including where she served her time, meeting with girls and helping them prepare for release and re-entry into their communities.
Lina grew up in Boston and currently lives in Worcester, Massachusetts. Having completed High School while in lock-up, Lina is currently attending Quninsigamond Community College part-time.
