Caught Up: Girls, Surveillance, and Wraparound Incarceration

Walk in the shoes of Latina girls who are caught up in the school-to-prison pipeline. Jerry Flores takes us forty miles outside of Los Angeles, California where the girls’ rigid routine is set by California’s integrated school and institutional confinement-traveling daily from home to the “El Valle” Juvenile Detention Center, to  “Legacy” Community School and back home. Though they are provided with a well-intentioned wraparound of services and are actually able to leave the detention facility, Flores brings attention to the inescapable surveillance of the state’s formal detention system.
