Birth Family

Crittenton Location: St. Cloud, Maryland ()

Timeframe:

1952-1955

Search Details:

I was born August 29, 1952 (8/29/52) and in 1955 was placed with the McMillen family of Baltimore, MD. The placement and adoption was facilitated by the Episcopal Social Ministries formally known as the Church Mission of Help. They are not an adoption agency but work with searching adoptees and birth parents.
According to their records, my birth mother was 18, lived in a suburb of Baltimore and attended an Episcopal Church whose rector arranged the contact with this agency. She went to a maternity home in Washington D.C. in early July to await my birth, which occurred at an D.C. area Hospital. She had decided to place me for adoption, but at the last minute she changed her mind. According to my adoptive parents, I was with her until about 1955 when I was placed in an orphanage. I was in the orphanage for about 9 months before I was placed with the McMillens, who changed my name from Stephanie to Leah. Judge Ralph Warnken circuit court of Baltimore City signed my adoption papers on 6/1/56. I have no family or medical history. My birth mother would have been born about 1934. Supposedly my birth father was killed in the Korean War, but as you know unwed mothers were not very popular in those days and the story about my father is likely to be untrue.
I have DNA on the following sites:
Ancestry
MyHeritage
FamilyTreeDNA
GEDmatch (kit AV6449605)
23andMe (test ordered)

Half Brother

Crittenton Location: , Montana ()

Timeframe:

1947

Search Details:

My mother, Maxine, was in the Helena Montana home in 1947, but apparently gave birth to a boy in Great Falls sometime in the last third of the year (we assume the time frame, based on the fact she graduated in Browning MT., pregnant, but not quite showing in June of that year). Her maiden name was Kindall (sometimes spelled Kendall), the father was a Blackfeet Indian named William "Willie" White. The father died young in 1955 at the age of 26, somewhere in Glacier County, MT.

The child was reportedly adopted immediately after birth by a christian family, rumored to be ranchers from the Billings Montana area. The adoption was prearranged by the superintendent of the Montana Assembly of God Church council. (My mother's parents were AG ministers in Montana at the time). A mutual friend of my uncle, who somehow had knowledge of the family, many years later reported he had been named Joe.

The facts of the first paragraph we are fairly confident to be accurate: my mom had a baby boy sometime in 1947, either in Helena or Great Falls, and the name of the father. The rest of the information related in the second paragraph could be wrong and we don't want to lose possible leads because they don't match up (ie, first name of Joe). Most of the information is based on the recollection of our 90 year old uncle who, although 19 years old at the time, has blended and mixed up stories of the life of the mutual friend and her children to story of the child born to our mother (his sister).

If you have any knowledge, or suspect you or a relative may fit this description, please email me. We would love to find out the story of our long lost half brother. The child would now be about 71 years old in 2018, and would be one quarter (or more) Blackfeet Indian. (Willy was reported to be one half Blackfeet, but may have been more, or full). We have no idea of his adoptive family, his life, if he is living or dead, or if he is/was aware of his adoption, heritage, or parentage.

If my uncle is correct about the mutual friend reporting the child's name as "Joe", then we are fairly confident he was still alive at least into the 1990's. Thank you.

Admitted from Hawaii April 1968, brought from Aunt and Uncle\'s house that I stayed with until it was obvious that Iwas Pregnant. I was 18 and bor n in Des Moines, IA. I moved to Hawaii in secret so my parents & Relatives would not know. I knew God would have a plan for me. My parents found out and \r\nBegged me to come back to IA to be taken care of with family. \r\nBut, they wanted ot all secret-- they flew me to Sioux City to my Aunt and Uncles who said I could stay woth them until I showed too much. Mail could be sent to Hawaii to a girlfriend, postmarked, and sent tp relatives so they thought I was still in Hawaii! What a farse, a Game, a Big Lie - to cover the Family Name! \r\nThat was the 60\'s and I was the 1st Grandchild-- everyone looked to me to be the Goodgirl-- in EVERYTHING-- it might start a Downslide in the Family genes... What ever -- I wore a SCARLET LETTER FOREVER IN MY MIND... Not until my late 50\'s did I tell any Family, and many were gone by then. It is only through the encouragement of councelors that I have finally reached out... My shame, my dis- Respect of myself and Fear of someone finding out SCARED ME TO DEATH. Even the forms when a Doctor would ask have you ever had a child... I was torn as to what to say, is it important to my health that they know, maybe i should say... Back and forth.. You see I never told anyone about my uncle raping me at the age 11 either, how could you tell that, I loved him, he was a Mentor, he was Grandma\'s sister\'s husband, he was a decorated Military man, my Grandpa who lived next door would have killed him, my Dad, would have gone after him too! I waited until his death and my Auntie\'s death, and i was in my 20\'s before I told Mom and Grandma. My Dad and Grandpa were gone by then also, and I was seeing a councilor. I needed for them to know. I think sometimes it made things worse, they didn\'t know how to handle such things. \r\nAt the home, when I got there I was very surprised at the ages of the girls and found that I even knew someone there . We were like Military detainees, timetables, work schedules insiide and out that kept the Home running and clean. The day I went into labor I was scrubbing floors ... My labor was 24 hrs or more and I wasn\'t taken to the hospital until the last three hours or so. I thought it was so horrible, so isolated, my parents never called, I was alone. Why did I come here over and over in my head, Hawaii would have been so much more Humane! After Birth they let me see you...so Angelic, how could we ever part? Dark, beautiful chestnut shiny hair, I named You \"Gregory\" after Gregory Peck, he was was Honest,Truth & had Eyes full of Love - like yours, that was when they put you on my belly to cut the \r\ncord... How could we ever part, spirits one... I visited you every moment I could... Then Mom came up. She sat in that office and said \" you know it will Kill Your Dad if you leep this Baby! His reputation that he built all these years, je will never ne able to advance... I Loved My Dad like no Other! It would have killed me to hurt him... My Heart Tore to Pieces that day knowing I would have to leave you for my Dad\'s Future... But I loved him that much! That was April... In Late September that year he passed away from a Heart attack... Confusion, sickness to my Gut, anger, a camcer that has grown in my mind amd Soul for years.. It has marked my Strength to be all I could be, it has Comti\r\nNied to bbe that SCARLET LETTER HIDDEN UNDER EVERY ARTICLE OF CLOTHING I WEAR. A piece of my Life Lives out in the World apart from me that I may NEVER MEET?\' SORRY IS SUCH A PITIFUL WORD too Small to Express my feelings.. If you are there somewhere. I am Humbled to at least speak to you. Light & Love to you and your Family my Angelic Star of Love.

Looking For: My Birth Daughter Born: April 14\r\n\r\nLocation: Youngstown, Ohio (Mahoing County).\r\n\r\nI placed myself in the Home when I was 4 months pregnant and I was there until after your birth. I was all alone in a new town. Most of my memories are erased with the Home and people I met there. \r\n\r\nThey let me hold you 1 time for a few minutes and told me that the adoptive parents were already there to take you away from me.\r\n\r\nI was never able to get over giving up my daughter (undue harsh influence of those around me) for adoption. I have tried without success to find you. I am 67 years old now and my husband is no longer living. \r\n\r\nThe only person in my family that knew at the time was my dad. He drove me to Youngstown and dropped me off and visited me 1 time. The only other time I saw him was when he came to pick me up after the birth. He never asked me anything about you. I asked if he wanted to know about you and he said no. But I did tell him that I had a little girl! It was such a different time then. So much shame for my dad and I have never forgiven myself for hurting him. When I did marry, my dad would not walk me down the aisle, because of my getting pregnant without being married. \r\n\r\nThe man I married knew that I had you, but we never ever talked about it after I told him. It was like it did not happen. I thought he needed to know after he proposed to me, so that if he wanted to back out of the relationship, he could. He didn\'t but we never talked about it again. \r\n\r\nYou have 2 half brothers. Your father was in Vietnam when I discovered I was pregnant with you. We dated for 4 years and he took my viriginity. I have tried to find him and have not been successful.\r\n\r\nWhen I gave birth to you, I almost died. The doctor had to operate on me to save my life as I had lost so much blood. In the middle of the night, I woke up & somehow knew I was dying and got out of bed and found the nurse. By the time I got to her, I fainted in the hallway. They rushed me into surgery again and my life was saved.\r\n\r\nI could not get an abortion. I was a Catholic and I do not believe in abortion. The least I could do for you since I was unable to keep you was to give you life.\r\n\r\nI just need to know my child. It\'s my under-standing that only the child can open the records and can unseal the records. \r\n\r\nI named you Jane, but always wanted your name to be Stephanie. Someone tried to contact me through my sister years ago and I was told there was a \"Stephanie\" Lunder registered at the University of Akron, OH.\r\n\r\nIt is cruel punishment not to know if the child you gave birth to is dead, alive, well and happy. Only seeing for myself will I believe that someone took proper care of the daughter I loved and wanted to keep. \r\n\r\nIf you read this and want to talk, we can. I want to know you were given decent parents and that you had a happy childhood.\r\n\r\nLoving thoughts coming your way. I would love to hold you and tell you how much I wanted you then and now.\r\n\r\nYour birth mother, Eva Lunder

I recently found out that I have a half brother. He tried to contact my mother in 2016 after my father died. He wrote her a letter, but it did not include his adopted name only his birth name. He was not sure that he wanted two way contact at the time. Our Mother had Alzheimer's and was fading fast at that time. She has recently passed away , and I do not wish to be intrusive in to my half brother's life, but I did not even know he existed until his letter arrived. I would very much like to talk to him, my mother's life was not such that she could have ever told us about having a baby when she was 16. My mother was not given a choice about the adoption. I have since talked to other family members that knew about my mother having a baby in 1947 but their memories are fuzzy. I do have a little more information that I would like to share. My mother's name was Zoe Ann Wilson and her child's birth name was James Eugene Wilson. Please contact me, James. Thank You, Dan Hockley.
